Switching to WordPress from Squarespace
If you’re using Squarespace and finding it difficult to add new functionality, such as e-commerce, you may want to put WordPress and WooCommerce at the top of your shopping list. WordPress is installed in over 30% of the websites of the world (don’t just take our word for it, check out the stats here: w3techs.com. The reason so many people use WordPress is that it’s flexible and there are plenty of options available to do exactly what you need, mostly, out-of-the-box.
What can WordPress do?
WordPress started as a blogging platform, but now it’s more commonly used for building brochure and e-commerce websites. With the WooCommerce plugin (also built by the people that created WordPress) and the plethora of additional add-ons, you can build a very sophisticated e-commerce website for your business. Of course, if you just want a blog, you can use WordPress for that!
What plugins do I need?
We always install a security plugin for WordPress when we take over managing a site for a client. This is because WordPress is also targeted by hackers. As the software is open source and it’s commonly installed and often out of date, it means it’s a prime target for hackers. Older unsupported plugins are also something we replace with better supported (often paid-for) plugins that provide better functionality and security enhancements.
Do I need to be worried about hackers?
Not really. You should be wary of any service that proclaims to be hacker-proof! All systems could be hacked, they just may not have yet. WordPress like any other platform can be managed and secure. In fact, we’ve not had any of our client’s WordPress sites hacked simply because they are kept up to date. Keeping your website maintained and updated is the number one way to ensure your business and client data is safe and secure.
If you’ve outgrown Squarespace, WordPress should be a pretty easy transition. With the right website designer, you’ll get a website that is better suited to your business needs and will grow with you. Finding the right developer, someone you can easily work with and has a team of experts (e.g. not just a sole developer, that has risks of its own) means your website can evolve as your business grows and be well maintained.
